THE TYRANT
Project Artaud Theatre - San Francisco March 12, 2008 at 8:00 PM March 14, 2008 at 8:00 PM March 15, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Inspired by the writings of Italo Calvino, Paul Dresher's The Tyrant presents the claustrophobic world of a despot, portrayed by John Duykers, tenor, who is unable to leave his throne out of fear of being overthrown. Isolated in his palace, the Tyrant is forced to experience his kingdom entirely through the medium of sound. Yet after years of absolute control and constant vigilance, he has become weary and susceptible to doubts and fears.
Techno-diva Amy X Neuburg presents a "greatest hits" roundup from her song cycle for voice, cello trio, and live electronics. Conceived largely while riding on New York subways, "The Secret Language of Subways" use urban imagery and metaphors of war to explore the deceits, battles and triumphs within personal relationships. Using drum pads, faders and pedals, Neuburg processes both her voice and the cellos with effects and real-time looping, to build up layered harmonies and counterpoints live on stage.
Composer: Paul Dresher Librettist: Jim Lewis Tenor: John Duykers Directed by Melissa Weaver
