THE PROGRAM: World Premieres of new work by Roger Reynolds, Mark Applebaum, and Dan Becker. Excerpts from Paul Dresher's new chamber opera THE TYRANT, starring John Duykers
Hailed by The Seattle Times as "A tour de force--a gripping music theater piece that is witty, poignant and wonderfully effective," The Tyrant presents the progressively unhinged world of a tyrant who, unable to leave his throne out of fear of being deposed, is forced to experience his kingdom entirely through the medium of sound.
The Tyrant, which will premiere this May at Cleveland Opera, was composed by Paul Dresher to a libretto by Jim Lewis. Directed by Melissa Weaver, it features sets by Alex Nichols, lighting by Tom Ontiveros, and set construction by Daniel Schmidt. The instrumental performers will be Tod Brody, flutes; Joel Davel, percussion; Peter Josheff, clarinets; Alex Kelly, cello; Marja Mutru, piano; and Karen Bentley Pollick, violin.
