Heart of a Soldier
September 16-24, 2017
Early music of war and peace by Byrd, Tomkins, Janequin and Dufay. Passionate martial music from Russia: works by Glinka and the songs of ordinary soldiers. New works for Chanticleer by Mason Bates and John Musto take their place alongside an extract from Jennifer Higdon's "Cold Mountain" and lighthearted popular music from the home front.
A Chanticleer Christmas
December 10-23, 2017
We follow the journey of the wise men, across the ages and the world. Our fellow pilgrims are a motley group of shepherds and onlookers–Welsh, Huron, Indian, English, Americans of all origins–reveling in the wonder, joy, and peace that the Christmas story brings. Candle-lit Gregorian chant gives way to music by Morales, Gonzalez, Victoria, Poulenc, Sweelinck, and traditional carols, gospel and spirituals.
March 10 - April 8, 2018
Saints Ignatius, Cecilia, Joseph, Peter and Francis are here brought to life in sublime Mexican and Bolivian music by Araujo, Franco, Sumaya, Padilla, Flores and anonymous writers. Come back with us to the repertoire for which we were made, in missions for which this music was written and to which Chanticleer’s founder Louis A. Botto was especially devoted.
Then & There, Here & Now
June 9-16, 2018
Favorite composers and compositions by Stucky, Sametz, Bates, and Chen Yi. A new work by up and coming star Matthew Aucoin. Classic Chanticleer folk, pop, jazz and gospel from our favorite arrangers: Jennings, Puerling, McGlynn, Peterson, and Price. The heart-rending early music by Victoria, Gibbons, Palestrina, Byrd and others with which we started. An emotional trip down memory lane recalling Chanticleer’s 40 years as an orchestra of voices.
