LINES Ballet is thrilled to present a landmark world premiere collaboration uniting two global artistic forces: Grammy Award-winning bassist, vocalist, and composer esperanza spalding and contemporary ballet pioneer Alonzo King, April 11–19, 2026 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
spalding’s intricate harmonies and soulful improvisations will come together with King’s celebrated choreographic language, renowned for its sculptural beauty, emotional depth, and expansive sense of space. Together with the sublime dancers of LINES Ballet, they will craft a dynamic dialogue between music and movement that promises to be unlike anything else on stage today. spalding will perform live with LINES Ballet at all performances.
The program will also include LINES Ballet’s critically acclaimed Ode to Alice Coltrane, honoring the groundbreaking composer and musician whose music continues to inspire, back by popular demand.

Directed by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Drea Cooper, ORIGINS is an intimate portrait of Alonzo King and LINES Ballet, blending breathtaking performances with personal stories and insights. Filmed in spectacular settings from the Arizona desert to the galleries of SFMOMA, ORIGINS offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the company’s creative process. More than a documentary, ORIGINS is a poetic meditation on life, love, and the inspiring power of movement.
The 2:00pm screening will be followed by a Q&A with Alonzo King and the artists of LINES Ballet.
Please note: all tickets to this screening are General Admission, there is no reserved seating.
Your ticket to the ORIGINS screening does not include admission to the SFMOMA galleries. Likewise, you do not need to purchase a ticket to SFMOMA to attend the screening. Film attendees will be entering SFMOMA at 147 Minna Street.
