Led by Music Director Daniel Hope, New Century Chamber Orchestra is one of only a handful of conductorless chamber ensembles in the world that makes musical decisions collaboratively. Since it was founded in 1992, New Century has performed beloved masterworks from the chamber orchestra repertoire and breathed life into commissioned works for audiences all over the San Francisco Bay Area as well as nationally and internationally. Highlights include seven album releases including three on former Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg’s NSS Music Label; a debut European Tour of Germany and Poland in July 2019; and six San Francisco episodes of Hope@Home – Next Generation broadcasted online to audiences throughout the world in November 2020.

Berlin 1938: Broadcasts from a Vanishing Society
Friday, September 16, 2022, 7:30PM (Opening Night & Afterparty*)
Saturday, September 17, 2022, 7:30PM
Sunday, September 18, 2022, 3:00PM

New Century Chamber Orchestra celebrates the opening of its landmark 30th Anniversary Season with a gripping musical radio drama that will transport you back in time to the early days of San Francisco’s historical Presidio Theater. The gathering clouds of war in Europe loomed large over the events of 1938, fueling the songwriters of the era to create works stunning in their candor, humor and commentary about the rapid changes in German society and growing threats of violence. In this innovative multimedia production, Music Director Daniel Hope and New Century will take you on a fascinating musical tour of works by Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht, Hanns Eisler, and more, while vocalists Thomas Hampson and Horst Maria Merz narrate the action in the dual roles of radio broadcasters and singers. You won’t want to touch that dial!

*All ticket holders to the Friday, September 16 performance of Berlin 1938 are invited to a special opening night after-party in the outdoor courtyard of the Presidio Theatre. The evening will feature cocktails and swing dancing. Single tickets for this evening are priced slightly higher than the other nights and include a drink ticket!

From the ominous fog horns of the San Francisco Bay in Hitchcock’s Vertigo to the chaotic city streets of Gershwin’s An American in Paris, New Century puts you at the heart of the drama with a selection of soundtrack music from some of the most iconic movies in cinematic history. Music Director Daniel Hope joins Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botnivov for a performance of Tan Dun’s Double Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Orchestra, an electrifying work that weaves driving percussion and graceful melodies from the Oscar-winning composer’s soundtracks to such martial arts epics as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. A celebration of the American West concludes the program with a special arrangement of music by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

Sparkling Connections
Friday, February 10, 2023, 7:30PM

Ring in New Century’s 30th Anniversary with an evening of music that celebrates the occasions that bring us closer together. New Century is joined by the San Francisco Girls’ Chorus for an opening trio of songs that beckon you out of hibernation and towards the pleasures of life. Daniel Hope performs Mendelssohn’s charming D minor Violin Concerto, which dodged obscurity through the collegial advocacy between generations of violinists. The program closes with Haydn’s theatrical “La Passione” Symphony, born out of a freewheeling period of intense emotional expression.

As New Century prepares to embark on a 30th anniversary European tour, we invite you to join the orchestra on a series of musical journeys that spark meaningful insights from ideas of the past. Two works explore American’s identity as a melting pot, including Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, a reimagining of our national anthem, and Nico Muhly’s Stranger, a song cycle that reflects on the American immigrant experience, featuring acclaimed tenor Nicholas Phan. Masterful tributes to their predecessors are showcased in two landmark British works from the 20thcentury, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Benjamin Britten’s Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge. The world premiere of a new co-commissioned work by Hannah Kendall rounds out the program.
