New Century Chamber Orchestra
Led by Music Director Daniel Hope, New Century Chamber Orchestra is one of only a handful of conductorless chamber ensembles in the world that makes musical decisions collaboratively. Since it was founded in 1992, New Century has performed beloved masterworks from the chamber orchestra repertoire and breathed life into commissioned works for audiences all over the San Francisco Bay Area as well as nationally and internationally. Highlights include seven album releases including three on former Music Director Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg’s NSS Music Label; a debut European Tour of Germany and Poland in July 2019; and six San Francisco episodes of Hope@Home – Next Generation broadcasted online to audiences throughout the world in November 2020.

As New Century prepares to embark on a 30th anniversary European tour, we invite you to join the orchestra on a series of musical journeys that spark meaningful insights from ideas of the past. Two works explore American’s identity as a melting pot, including Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, a reimagining of our national anthem, and Nico Muhly’s Stranger, a song cycle that reflects on the American immigrant experience, featuring acclaimed tenor Nicholas Phan. Masterful tributes to their predecessors are showcased in two landmark British works from the 20thcentury, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Benjamin Britten’s Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge. The world premiere of a new co-commissioned work by Hannah Kendall rounds out the program.
