Cantata Collective Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Nicholas McGegan, perform the Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Featuring soloists Sherezade Panthaki, soprano, Rhianna Cockrell, alto, Thomas Cooley, tenor, and Paul Max Tipton, bass, this program is brought to you in the Bay Area’s temple of early music, First Church of Berkeley. Come and hear Bach’s declaration of glory and of faith, of hope and of mercy. Together we rejoice in peace and celebrate the spirit.
Cantata Collective, "a group of Bay Area early music luminaries" (San Francisco Chronicle) gave its first performance of Bach’s cantatas in 2017. Since then, its FREE concerts of this timeless repertoire have become a mainstay of the community’s musical life. The group has begun an ongoing series of recordings for Centaur Records, the first of which prompted Early Music America to write "To the excellent musicians of Cantata Collective: SEND MORE BACH, PLEASE!" In addition, the Cantata Collective presents annual large-scale performances of Bach’s major choral works, conducted by Nicholas McGegan, and featuring a roster of early music superstars as soloists. The St. John Passion, performed and recorded in March 2021 is followed this season with the Mass in B minor. These performances, recorded live, are to be released on the AVIE label.
