The Universal Language Concert will be led by Matthew Fell, the newly appointed Artistic Director of the San Francisco Pride Band's Concert Band program. Matthew Fell is an accomplished music educator and conductor with degrees in Music Education and Trombone Performance from Biola University and a Masters in Instrumental Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University. Matthew is currently the Assistant Director of Bands at Amador Valley High School.
When conceiving this program, Fell chose music and composers that are rooted in and inspired by human experiences, and informed by the links between shape, movement, and identity. Music, movement, and identity have always been inextricable. Whenever humans are traveling — across oceans, toward opportunity, or even inward in search of identity and hope — music has been part of the process. The program features A Sky So Boundless, by Katahj Copley, Shenandoah, by Omar Thomas, Of Endless Miles and Empty Rafts, by Michele Fernandez, and many more!

About San Francisco Pride Band:
San Francisco Pride Band is the first openly-gay musical organization in the world, inspiring the formation of LGBTQ+ bands, choruses, and performing groups around the globe. Founded in 1978 by Jon Sims at the height of Anita Bryant's anti-gay crusade, the Band has made music to build understanding among communities of all sexual orientations and identities for more than four decades. Ever since making a splash by marching up Market Street with Harvey Milk's convertible in the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade, the Band has been appearing throughout the City and its environs to promote LGBTQ+ visibility. By city ordinance, in 2018 the Band was named "The Official Band of the City and County of San Francisco". For over 40 years, the Band has continued to play with pride and build Jon's envisioned world where music could put a known face on coming out, where music builds bridges, and where it wouldn’t matter whether you were queer or not. In the words of our inimitable founder Jon Sims, "Our Message is Music!"
