The evening begins with Smetana’s The Moldau, a shimmering portrait of a river as it gathers strength and sweeps through the Bohemian countryside. From its first delicate ripples to its majestic, surging current, the music unfolds like a cinematic journey—lyrical, dramatic, and irresistibly alive.
Then comes Lalo’s Cello Concerto, performed by Anne Richardson. Here, the cello takes center stage in a work of astonishing color and emotional range. Virtuosic yet deeply expressive, Lalo gives the soloist music that can whisper with intimacy one moment and blaze with intensity the next. In Anne Richardson’s hands, the cello becomes not simply an instrument, but a voice—passionate, vulnerable, and powerful.
The mood turns inward with Tchaikovsky’s Lensky’s Aria from Eugene Onegin. In this heartbreaking meditation, a young man faces love, regret, and the knowledge that time cannot be turned back. Tchaikovsky distills an entire human drama into seven unforgettable minutes: tender, soaring, and achingly beautiful.
And then—the transformation.
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 erupts with an energy that is impossible to resist. Beethoven called it one of his finest works, and its rhythmic vitality remains electrifying nearly two centuries later. From the hypnotic pulse of the second movement to the breathtaking momentum of the finale, the symphony gathers force until it seems to lift the entire hall.

A voice.
A farewell.
A celebration.

Anne Richardson was appointed to the San Francisco Symphony as Associate Principal Cello by music director Esa-Pekka Salonen at the beginning of the 2024–25 season. As a soloist, she made her Lincoln Center debut at the age of 19, performing Henri Dutilleux's Cello Concerto, "Tout un monde Lointain..", with the Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of Alan Gilberg at David Geffen Hall. Additional solo appearances include concerts with the Louisville Orchestra, Massapequa Philharmonic, Bryan Symphony Orchestra, and Juilliard's Pre-College Symphony, among others. She has been featured by Lincoln Center’s Great Performance Circle, Juilliard in Aiken Festival, and Vail International Dance Festival, and has also performed extensively as a chamber musician at the Nymphenburger Sommer in Munich, Tegernsee International Music Festival, Wasserburg Rathauskonzerte Series, Rome Chamber Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, United Nations Chamber Music Society, and with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players.
A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Richardson completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the Juilliard School as a student of Richard Aaron, and earned a doctor of musical arts at the University of Michigan. She was previously an academy fellow with the Bavarian Radio Symphony in Munich, Germany and has performed with the Verbier Festival Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and Pittsburgh Symphony. She was named the Kentucky Center’s Gheens Artist in Residence in 2019 and was a guest faculty member and artist in residence at the 2018 Tennessee Cello Workshop and the Domaine Forget Academy.
