Lauded as “poised and monstrously talented,” violinist Benjamin Beilman leads New Century through music that hits with both intensity and vulnerability. Olli Mustonen’s playful nonet crackles with energy and unpredictability before melting into the intimate warmth of Eugène Ysaÿe’s lullaby and Sibelius’s lyrical suite, showcasing the violin’s humanity and vulnerability . Schoenberg’s symphonic poem then leads us on an evening stroll through a moonlit forest, a shadowed confession, and a resolution of peace and exuberance. Curated by Daniel Hope and Thomas Hampson with the New Century Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco RISING unfolds like a living historical documentary in music, tracing the city’s evolution from the Gold Rush to the signing of the United Nations Charter in 1945 at the historic Herbst Theatre.
