Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™
was created in 1993 by accident by San Francisco comedian, Lisa Geduldig, who went to South Hadley, Massachusetts that October to perform at a women’s comedy night at what she thought was a comedy club. But upon her arrival, she discovered that Peking Garden Club was actually a Chinese Restaurant! After telling Jewish jokes at a Chinese restaurant, a conversation the next day between Lisa and an old summer camp friend led to the creation of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ - Jewish Comedy on Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant, which is a take-off on the tradition of Jews going to a Chinese Restaurant and a movie on Christmas. And the rest is history. Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™, which set out to answer the age-old question, “What are Jews supposed to do on Christmas?” is now celebrating its 34th year and is one of San Francisco’s longest running comedy shows!

Many of the great household name Jewish comedians have graced the Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ stage. Henny Youngman performed his last show there in 1997 at 91 years old. Shelley Berman has headlined, as has David Brenner, as have many others in the Who’s Who of Jewish comedians including Elayne Boosler, Carol Leifer (who headlines this year!), Cathy Ladman, Wendy Liebman, Jeff Ross, Gary Gulman… and the list goes on.

Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ takes place at the Imperial Palace Restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown. (The New Asia Restaurant, where Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ had been held since 1997 - its 5th year - closed during the pandemic and converted into a supermarket.) Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ returned to its pre-pandemic format of 2 shows a day in 2022. All 6 shows take place in-person AND virtually (on YouTube Live) again this year, thus catering to the national and international online audiences developed since 2020 as well as to those who prefer to watch from home.

Partial proceeds benefit Chinatown YMCA Food Bank & Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) Food Bank.

This year’s Kung Pao Kosher Comedy shows are once again dedicated to the memory of Arline Geduldig, Lisa’s mamelah (and Kung Pao and Lockdown Comedy special guest comedian) who passed away in August 2024 at the age of 93.

34th Annual Kung Pao Kosher ComedyAriel Elias is a comedian living in New York City. Growing up, this Kentucky Jew made everyone laugh at her bat mitzvah, and the rest is history. Today, her comedy is a fun mesh of unique, personal stories mixed with witty and wry observations. Most recently, Ariel released her debut stand up special A Jewish Star through 800 Pound Gorilla, which can be seen on their YouTube channel. Described as “a sly young comic from Kentucky” by the New York Times, Ariel has also been featured in Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, and on Good Morning America. As a traveling stand up comedian, she has performed on the set of the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, was named a “New Face” at the 2021 Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, and most recently performed stand up on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. After catching Jimmy Kimmel’s attention with a viral stand up clip that displayed her cool, calm, and hilarious composure, he invited Ariel to make her late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In the same week she also appeared for an interview on the daytime talk show, Sherri. www.ArielEliasComedy.com

34th Annual Kung Pao Kosher ComedyLisa Geduldig is a San Francisco-based comedian and the creator, producer, and MC of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy™ — Jewish Comedy on Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant. Before the pandemic, Lisa had been running Comedy Returns to El Rio, a monthly decade-long comedy show at El Rio in San Francisco where her comedy career began 30+ years ago. From July 2020 until September 2024, Lisa produced the monthly Lockdown Comedy on Zoom from the underwear drawer in the guest room at her mother’s retirement community home in Florida, where she accidentally got marooned (in Florida, not in the underwear drawer) for 17 months during the pandemic (and became a fan of the Early Bird special). She commuted between Florida and San Francisco for the following three years until her mother passed away in August 2024. Lisa appeared in a Canadian documentary, Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas, which aired on Canadian and European TV in December 2017. She is also a freelance arts publicist in both English and Spanish.
