This special event is a Lecture / Demonstration, "Shostakovich Walks the Tightrope", with the Pacifica Quartet and conductor Paul Phillips
The program's theme is the balance the composer had to strike between his art and his survival in the USSR under Stalin. For the lecture/demonstration on March 15, the quartet will collaborate with distinguished conductor Paul Phillips. Mr. Phillips, director of orchestral studies at Stanford, has had a varied career including conducting stints with Frankfurt Opera, Dallas Symphony, Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Salta (Argentina), Paul Taylor Dance Company and the San Francisco Symphony. For nine years at Brown University, Phillips taught a course about Shostakovich’s relationship to the Soviet state.
